WHAT IS MARMA
Marma Shakti is a powerful
instrument of Ayurveda that originated 6000 years ago, a
process, and a therapy that works with 108 subtle and
sensitive energy points in the body.
It is a Shakti, and the word ‘shakti’
means energy – because if you want to activate an
energy, you need to have energy. To activate the energy,
you need to know how to press the points.
I will share a story with you, just one
of the thousands we have seen over the years. We were
working in Italy and one woman came to the Jivan Shakti
clinic who had a retroverted uterus, fibroids and a
uterine cyst. Her regular doctor had examined her and
said to her, “Now we will have to do surgery to remove
She came to us and showed her pulse. We
started giving the treatment and then we did marma.
After seven marma sessions, we told her to go back and
have another medical report. They went to the hospital
and found that: 1) the uterus was normal. It was no
longer retroverted, 2) the fibroids had disappeared. So,
the professor said, “I don’t believe this. Let’s check
with another laboratory.” And they did that. The results
were the same. This is the power of Marma.
Now, this lady is becoming an Ayurvedic
doctor. She has now gone to Australia to study medicine
and now she is coming this December to learn in India.
She said, “I just have no choice but to believe this.”
Here is one other example. Every day at
our Jivan Shakti Health Centre in India, we see 400-500
people and some are suffering from epilepsy. Suddenly,
one of them may get an epileptic attack. They actually
have a seizure in our waiting area. For this there are
three marma points and in exactly one to one ½ minutes,
the client’s condition comes back to normal. If he is
biting the tongue, he stops and suddenly he is aware.
These Marma points bring his circulation to a certain
area in the brain and bring that person back to
consciousness. Marma is extremely powerful.
My teacher, Baba Ramdas Swami, taught
me many, many kinds of marmas. He used Marma for
everything from removing tonsils, working with back
pain, working with neck pain, working with hydrocele and
hernia, and all were giving results. While he was
training us, first he would do the Marma and then he
would tell us to do it on some people. He would then
observe and then if it what we were doing was not
proper, he would tell us. In this way we learned many
amazing things about Marma and what it could do.
CAN DO What is its purpose? What can it do?
There are 4 basic purposes of Marma:
1) It removes blocks in energy channels called
2) It brings Vata dosha to its normal path –
especially vyana vata,
3) It creates physical,
mental and emotional flexibility. Because of AAM
(toxins) and because of VATA (wind element), human
beings after 30, 35 or 40 become rigid – and this
happens to animals and plants too. Vata is increased in
our body so we experience degeneration. This rigidity
can mean becoming fixed in ideas, emotionally, in
physical movements – like arthritis, frozen shoulder,
blockages in the neck, or tightness when people get up
in the morning. Marma can change all this.
brings an opportunity to experience powerful and dynamic
transformation at the physical, mental, emotional and
spiritual levels. With marma this transformation is
possible. Many times people are not able to go outside
their ‘comfort zone.’ They think that is all they can
do. After marma is done, they can go outside their
comfort zone and they start taking risks.
How do we rejuvenate? By
bringing the Vata dosha down, we take control of Vata.
This is a main point from our school of thought. So, if
we do proper marma, people get physical, mental and
emotional flexibility and they start seeing a different
way of looking at things. Marma involves pressing a
physical point on the body. Everything physical and
those 108 points affect the body, mind and emotions.
According to Ayurveda, there are two parts to the
brain—the left and right brain. Also, there is the
conscious and subconscious mind. The question we ask is,
“Where is the problem?” There are some marma points that
can work with the conscious mind and others that take
care of the subconscious mind.
So what are more of the physical,
mental and emotional benefits?
